The Cymdeithas Madog Scholarship Endowment Fund
For more than 30 years, Cymdeithas Madog has provided a unique opportunity to study the Welsh language in North America. Through the generosity of the Welsh National Gymanfa Ganu Association (WNGGA) and the National Welsh American Foundation (NWAF), Cymdeithas Madog has been able to offer each year a limited number of partial scholarships to help students attend the course. In addition to the partial scholarships, Cymdeithas Madog offers the Naomi Mergenthal Memorial Scholarship, a fully paid scholarship for one young person. In many cases, the award makes a crucial difference, but in other cases, it is not enough to enable a prospective student to attend.
In recent years, with the Cymdeithas Madog web site and increasing use of the Internet, more people, including university students, have expressed interest in attending the courses. While the organization is pleased about this trend, it highlights the existing need for more full scholarships. In response, Cymdeithas Madog, a non-profit organization (501c3) has established a Scholarship Endowment Fund and is now seeking donations. Contributions are U.S. tax deductible. The goal is to add to a $12,000 fund to build a $25,000 balance. The interest earned will be enough to provide the equivalent of two full scholarships each year, in addition to current scholarship programs.
You are invited to make a donation to Cymdeithas Madog for this purpose. There are numerous opportunities to do so. If you have ever received a scholarship, and now find yourself in a more stable financial situation, you are encouraged to donate the value of the scholarship you received. When making a memorial donation, consider the Scholarship Endowment Fund. Think of making a donation to honour a family member or friend for their birthday, anniversary, or other gift-giving occasion. Honour your Welsh ancestors with a donation in their name. You can make a deferred gift by including Cymdeithas Madog in your will. Each donor will receive a certificate of recognition.
Please send your contributions to:

Please make cheques payable to The Cymdeithas Madog Scholarship Endowment Fund.
Alternatively, you can make your donation to the Cymdeithas Madog Scholarship Endowment Fund via our Friends of Madog donation page.
Potentially your gift can be doubled: contact your employer to determine if they match employee charitable contributions.

Tom Reilly Scholarship
Tom passed away in April 2011, age 85. He had attended 30 consecutive Cyrsiau. His dedication to learning and kindness to his fellow students continues to inspire us all. We hope to carry on his legacy by encouraging younger students to follow in his footsteps through the creation of the Tom Reilly Memorial Scholarship.
The Tom Reilly Memorial Scholarship shall be awarded to a young person 25 years of age or under, at the end of the course week, for attendance at the following year’s Cwrs Cymraeg. It is a full scholarship for tuition, double room and board. The recipient must have attended at least one other Cwrs within the past 3 years, besides the current course. Recipients of scholarships in previous years are eligible for consideration. The Cymdeithas Madog Board will select the awardee who best exemplifies the mission of the scholarship, which is to encourage the lifelong enjoyment of Welsh language learning.
Any who wish to contribute to the scholarship fund in Tom’s name may do so via Paypal from our Friends of Madog page.
or by sending a check or money order made payable to Cymdeithas Madog to:

Please notify the scholarship chair of your decision to accept or not accept a scholarship offer within 2 weeks of the offer.
If for any reason you cannot come to the cwrs after accepting an offer, please notify the scholarship chair immediately.
Your deposit will not be refunded after you accept a scholarship.
Do I need a letter of recommendation?
Yes. For your scholarship application to be considered complete, a person who knows of your interest in the Welsh language must write a letter of recommendation on your behavlf and send it directly to the Scholarship Coordinator, postmarked prior to the application closing date. If you are applying for a matching scholarship, your sponsor must send a letter directly to the Scholarship Coordinator confirming the amount of money to be pledged for you.
Who could write a letter of recommendation?
The writer should know of your interest in Welsh. Typically, letters in the past have come from teachers, clergy, and fellow members of local Welsh societies. Relatives have written also, but this should be a last resort.
Does Cymdeithas Madog give scholarships for research, travel to Wales, or any other activity besides attending the weeklong intensive Cwrs Cymraeg?
No. Although we may think other projects are worthy, we have funds to support study on our course only. We cannot fund any other projects or study on any other Welsh course.
How does Cymdeithas Madog fund its scholarships?
Funding for the Cymdeithas Madog Scholarship Program comes from various sources, including grants provided by the National Welsh American Foundation, contributions by local Welsh societies and private donors, and from Cymdeithas Madog itself. Cymdeithas Madog established a Scholarship Endowment Fund to increase its ability to award scholarships. Please visit our Friends of Madog page to learn more about the Scholarship Endowment Fund.
